Tempest in a Teapot and Little Rituals
This morning I woke with the phrase “Tempest in a Teapot” in my head. No idea why, so I grabbed a cup of coffee and went about organizing my day.
I started my “to do” list - laundry, add detergent to shopping list, grocery, pick up a prescription, make a Chewy order, clean the nose prints off the front door. Again, I heard Tempest in a Teapot in my head. More on the to do list-print more business cards, check email for the day job (yes, even on weekends), fix an error on my website. Again, Tempest in a Teapot.
I finally stopped and tried to figure out why I was hearing this phrase. It means making a big deal out of something small.
Yikes. I was creating my own tempest in the teapot of my mind. Chaotic thoughts, anxiety, feeling pressured to get things done.
So, I made tea. This is my little ritual to help me step back from anxiety and calm down. Putting water in my old copper kettle, choosing my tea-decaf Lady Grey today, choosing my mug. These are all part of my tea ritual.
I went outside on the patio, drank some tea, and listened to the birds. I quieted the tempest in my teapot.
I encourage you to take comfort in whatever little ritual brings calm to your tempest. Petting your dog or cat, going outside and watching the clouds, practicing your golf swing. When your mind is quiet, congratulate yourself on weathering another storm, and enjoy your day.
Bright Blessings.
